The new reality: readiness before visibility
For two decades, accommodation discovery meant search results, comparison tabs and a booking click. AI-powered discovery compresses that journey into a single generated answer: the assistant either has enough reliable information to mention a property, or it does not. A hotel, inn, motel, campground or vacation rental cannot influence an AI answer if its own website does not publish the raw material the system needs — identity, location, rooms, rates, policies, amenities, fees, trust signals and a bookable path. Nokumo Research audited 375 accommodation websites across Illinois against 47 automated checks covering crawler access, structured identity, metadata, topical coverage, stated facts and trust signals, drawn from a sample of 498 attempted websites across 13 markets, with data collection on 30–31 July 2026. No AI model was queried for this report — that is deliberate. Visibility is what an AI system says; readiness is what a website gives it to say. This report measures the second.
The headline: 28.3 out of 100
The average Illinois accommodation website in the sample scores 28.3 out of 100 on ARI-L, the 47-check local form of the AI Readiness Index; the median site scores 26.2. The distribution is not a healthy curve with a strong middle — it is concentrated at the bottom, with 89% of audited websites (333 of 375) falling into the bottom two readiness bands and not one site reaching the Answer-Ready band. The statewide weakness is not access: the average Access & Permission pillar score is 90.2 out of 100, meaning most sites allow machines to retrieve their pages. The problem is what those pages contain — Structured Identity averages 25.4, Topical Coverage 15.4, Stated Facts 35.3, and Trust & Compliance 33.5. Metadata & Language is the strongest content-related pillar at 44.2, still below the midpoint.

Six-pillar readiness profile
The own goals: 22% cap their own score
Before content quality enters the picture, three gates test whether a machine can access the facts at all: G1 — Blocked, the site blocks retrieval-layer AI crawlers (score cap 40); G2 — JavaScript-only, core facts are missing from raw HTML (score cap 55); G3 — De-indexed, a key page carries noindex or nosnippet (score cap 50). In the sample, 83 websites (22%) trigger at least one gate: 71 trigger the JavaScript gate, 12 trigger a de-indexing gate, and 4 block retrieval crawlers outright (all four also trigger the JavaScript gate — gate counts should not be summed). The feared wave of AI-crawler blocking has not arrived in Illinois lodging — only 1% of audited sites fully block the retrieval crawlers tested. The larger problem is accidental invisibility: templates that render essential facts only after JavaScript execution, or indexing directives nobody intended. Separately, of 500 sampled rows, 498 were attempted and 375 were audited: 112 of the 498 attempted websites (22%) blocked the study's etiquette-compliant collector outright and were recorded as BOT_WALLED — never scored, never treated as failures — and 11 were unreachable. The bot-walled group matters: 87 of the 112 are chain-hotel rows, with Marriott, IHG, Hilton and Choice domains accounting for 64 of the blocked sites.

What a machine sees on arrival
The most basic act of machine-readable self-description is structured data that says, in effect, this entity is accommodation — and Illinois performs poorly on that first handshake. 45% of audited websites publish no structured data at all; 22% publish markup that describes a web page or node, not a business entity; 11% use a generic business type such as LocalBusiness or Organization; 21% use a specific accommodation type; and only 22% pass the check for a correct, specific lodging type applied consistently. Within the accommodation-specific group, Hotel is the most common type at 17% of the sample, while BedAndBreakfast, VacationRental and Motel each appear on roughly 1–2% of sites. The issue is not primarily broken schema — of sites with markup, 99% publish it without invalidating errors. The issue is absent or generic markup: machines cannot reliably classify a property that never tells them what it is.
The pages that do not exist
A human can infer a lot from photos, maps and design. A machine assembling an answer cannot — if a fact is not published in retrievable content, it is effectively unavailable. The Topical Coverage pillar averages 15.4 out of 100, the weakest of the six pillars, and for 98 of the 375 audited websites the crawler could find nothing to audit beyond the homepage. This is not a penalty on single-page websites — the scoring rules credit substantive sections on genuine single-page sites. The pages, sections and facts are simply missing.

The facts nobody states
Even where pages exist, the facts on them are thin. 46% of audited sites publish no price in readable text; only 18% carry a substantive FAQ with at least eight real questions and answers; only 13% state their core policy facts in full; 33% state distance or travel-time facts; 10% present room details in an extractable structure; and only 13% disclose a mandatory fee or tax amount, meaning 87% disclose none anywhere on their website. 56% publish no date anywhere on the site. 43% publish a phone number or email plus a postal address as plain text — the exception that proves the rule: when Illinois accommodation websites want a human to reach them, they usually manage it. The missing information is the information machines need. The fee finding is the strongest consumer angle in the study: a mandatory charge can include a lodging tax, resort fee, cleaning fee or parking charge, and in most cases the problem is not that a fee is mentioned without context — it is that no amount is attached at all.

Route 66 at 100: no corridor advantage
Route 66 turns 100 on 11 November 2026. Illinois holds the first roughly 301 miles, from Chicago to the Mississippi, and the corridor is preparing for a centennial travel surge. The study defined route66-corridor as an overlap reporting market covering 110 audited properties on or near the Illinois alignment. The honest headline is that there is no corridor deficit — the corridor scores 28.7 against a statewide average of 28.3, effectively the same. The real story is composition and timing: the corridor skews toward the segments with the thinnest machine-readable presence, with 51% of corridor properties professionally operated short-term rentals against 45% statewide, and only two of the 110 corridor properties are the classic independent motels associated with the route. Corridor sites also trigger score-capping gates at a 30% rate, above the statewide 22%. Eighty-eight of 110 corridor sites have no FAQ, 76 have no rooms page, and 46% publish no readable price. The corridor is not worse than Illinois — it is exactly as unprepared as Illinois, with a once-in-a-century demand event approaching.

The language effect: 99% English-only
The Illinois locale pack sets the expected language set at English and Spanish — English as the primary language, Spanish as the state's largest non-English language and an important domestic and inbound travel market. Against that expectation, 373 of 375 audited websites (99%) are English-only; two sites cover Spanish. This should be framed as an opportunity, not a compliance failure — a Spanish-language rooms page, FAQ and rates page is one of the few recommendations in the study that addresses a named, counted audience rather than an abstract machine, and it is also almost completely uncontested.

The market league table
Galena & the Driftless Area leads the Illinois market table at 36.2, followed by Peoria at 31.1 and Shawnee & Southern Illinois at 31.0. Chicago metro averages 30.5. Rockford & the North is lowest at 16.8, followed by Springfield at 17.1 — a gap from first to last of 19.4 points. Two cautions travel with the table: only Chicago metro and the residual Downstate group meet the study's n ≥ 60 threshold for full reporting, so every other market cell is descriptive only, and the middle of the ranking shifts under sensitivity variants — treat the middle as a band, not a ladder. Chicago also produced the study's most specific disclosure finding: of 41 auditable Chicago short-term-rental websites, 39 display no shared-housing registration number, two display a partial or unverifiable one, and none displays a complete, correctly formatted one. Chicago Municipal Code §4-14-020(a)(4) requires display in advertising, including an operator's own website — this finding reports website display only, not legal compliance; a property can hold a valid registration and not display the number.

The independent gap — with a chain-sized caveat
The expected story is that large chains, with larger budgets and engineering teams, should outperform independent properties. The sample says the opposite — with an important caveat. Independent lodging properties (every non-chain, non-rental segment) average 35.2 across 143 audited sites; auditable chain-hotel sites average 23.1 across 63 sites; professionally operated short-term rentals, the largest segment at 169 sites, average 24.5. The two strongest individual segments are independent hotels at 38.5 and resorts at 38.4; inns and B&Bs average 33.5. The independent advantage comes from content — independent properties write down what they know: rooms, policies, local guidance, arrival information and FAQs. Chains have better structured identity but thinner topical coverage and stated facts. Now the caveat: only 63 of the 150 sampled chain properties could be audited, because megabrand content networks blocked the study's collector, and the auditable chain subset skews toward smaller and softer brands — if the walled megabrands operate stronger machine infrastructure, the true chain average is higher than 23.1. The independent lead is directional, not definitive. What survives the caveat is more useful: the best websites in the sample are independent, and the difference between a strong and weak site is not budget — it is whether someone wrote the facts down.

What the good ones do
The eight Machine-Legible properties in Illinois span a country-house inn, a state-park lodge, downtown hotels and a bed and breakfast — the pattern is not large brand wins. A 57-room country-house inn and a state-park lodge outscore every chain property the study could audit. The top decile averages 6.2 audited pages, compared with 3.5 pages for the rest of the sample — their advantage is not scale, it is coverage: topical coverage averages 41.1 for the top decile against 12.5 for everyone else, and stated facts average 71.2. Clear beats large.

The playbook: what to do now
The most common high-value fixes are not redesigns, and the need is concentrated — 53% of audited websites score zero on rooms, amenities and FAQ coverage simultaneously, so for those properties one focused content sprint can produce a double-digit improvement against a statewide average of 28.3. Today: check robots.txt for retrieval-crawler blocks nobody chose, remove stray noindex or nosnippet directives from key pages, declare the correct lodging type plus a full address and phone number in structured data, and state check-in and check-out times in readable text. This week: write a real FAQ covering parking, pets, cancellation, breakfast, late arrival, accessibility and directions, add a dedicated rooms or units page with practical detail, and put at least one rate — with a date or season — in readable text. This month: add pages for amenities, policies, location, accessibility and the local area, name mandatory fees and taxes with amounts, date important content, and add Spanish-language rooms, FAQ and rates pages where the market justifies it. Ongoing: keep core facts in raw HTML, re-test machine readiness quarterly, re-check the website after template, booking-engine or CMS changes, and compare website, OTA, map and destination listings for consistency.

ARI v3.0 US-IL wave 1 audited 375 accommodation websites across Illinois from 498 attempted sites, drawn from a convenience frame of 500 properties; six rows failed intake and four were replaced, eleven sites were unreachable, and 112 blocked the study's collector and were recorded as BOT_WALLED without being scored. The index uses 47 automated checks across six pillars — Access & Permission, Structured Identity, Metadata & Language, Topical Coverage, Stated Facts, and Trust & Compliance. ARI-L is the 47-check local index; ARI-P is the 45-check portable variant. All findings are sample findings and support no population claim beyond the 375 audited websites. No AI model was queried — the study measures what websites publish, not what AI systems do with that information, and makes no claim that a higher score causes an AI recommendation, search ranking or booking. After the first QA pass, a scorer bug affecting nested-DOM section extraction was found and corrected; every property was re-scored from the stored corpus, and all figures in this report use the post-fix rescore — the correction changed the statewide mean from 25.1 to 28.3 and the bottom-two-band share from 93% to 89%, and did not change gate, crawler, structured-data, fee, language or registration findings. A 5% re-fetch subsample reproduced 99.78% of check levels, and an independent recomputation reproduced all 375 ARI values within ±0.5. Booking-engine presence is detected but deliberately excluded from scoring because it is adjacent to Nokumo's commercial products; a vendor-neutral index variant is published alongside the main score, and under that variant the statewide average, band distribution and named top performers do not change, though some market and segment positions do. Top performers are named; no low-scoring property and no individual short-term-rental host is named, and the Chicago registration finding reports website display only, not legal compliance. The study's registered prediction for the Q1 2027 Illinois wave is that the share of properties publishing rates in readable text will rise by at least five percentage points, while the share blocking retrieval crawlers will move by no more than two points; it will be graded publicly.
